Frequently Asked Questions

Everything parents ask about Sage โ€” answered honestly, in plain language.

๐Ÿš€ Getting Started
How do I set up Sage for my child? โ–พ
After creating your account, tap "Add Child" and enter your child's name, grade, and the curriculum their school follows (like Alberta or Common Core). That's it โ€” Sage is ready. We recommend running the quick diagnostic next so Sage knows exactly where to start.
How does the 7-day free trial work? What happens when it ends? โ–พ
You get full access to everything for 7 days โ€” no limits, no restrictions. When the trial ends, you'll be asked to subscribe to continue. If you cancel before the 7 days are up, you won't be charged a cent.
Can I add more than one child? โ–พ
Yes! One subscription covers every child in your household. Each child gets their own profile with their own grade, subjects, progress, and learning history. Sage treats each child as a unique learner.
What age range is Sage designed for? โ–พ
Kindergarten through Grade 12. The app adapts its language, difficulty, and visual theme based on your child's grade. Younger kids get a more playful experience with bigger buttons and voice mode. Older students get a clean, professional interface.
Do I need to set up anything before my child uses it? โ–พ
Just add their profile (name, grade, curriculum). After that, we recommend the quick diagnostic โ€” it takes about 15 minutes and shows Sage exactly where your child is strong and where they need support. But it's optional โ€” your child can start using Sage right away.
My child is in French Immersion โ€” does Sage support that? โ–พ
French is a supported subject, so Sage can help with French language work. Full French Immersion curriculum alignment is coming soon.
Can my child use Sage on their own, or do I need to sit with them? โ–พ
Sage is designed for independent use. Younger children (K-2) may need a hand with the initial setup, but after that they can use it on their own โ€” especially with Talk to Sage voice mode, where they just speak instead of type.
My child is homeschooled โ€” does Sage work for us? โ–พ
Absolutely. Select the curriculum closest to what you follow, or choose "Generic" for curriculum-neutral tutoring. Sage adapts to any learning path.
๐Ÿ“š What Sage Does
What subjects does Sage cover? โ–พ
Math, English/Reading, Science, Social Studies, History, French, Spanish, and Writing โ€” from Kindergarten through Grade 12. More subjects are added based on parent and teacher feedback.
Is Sage aligned to the school curriculum? โ–พ
Yes. Sage currently supports the Alberta Program of Studies, US Common Core, and a generic international option. Ontario and BC curriculum support are coming soon. When your child uses Sage, it teaches using the same terminology, methods, and expectations their teacher uses.
Will Sage just give my child the answers to their homework? โ–พ
No. This is the #1 thing Sage is designed NOT to do. When your child uploads homework, Sage walks them through each problem step by step โ€” explaining the thinking, not just the answer. Your child learns the process, and that's what sticks.
What's the difference between Pop Quiz, Surprise Me, and Practice Pack? โ–พ
Pop Quiz โ€” A quick burst of 8 questions across subjects to test what your child remembers. Great for daily practice.

Surprise Me โ€” Sage picks a fascinating topic and teaches your child something new. It's discovery-driven learning โ€” perfect for curious kids.

Practice Pack โ€” Focused practice on a specific topic with scoring. Works offline too.
What is the diagnostic assessment and should my child do it? โ–พ
The diagnostic is a quick 15-question assessment that maps where your child stands in their core subjects compared to where they should be at this point in the school year. It's not a test โ€” it's a starting point. The results go to your parent dashboard and help Sage personalize every session after that. We strongly recommend it, but it's optional.
What is "Talk to Sage" (voice mode)? โ–พ
Your child taps one button and just talks. Sage listens, responds out loud in a warm voice, and the conversation flows naturally โ€” like a phone call with a tutor. No typing, no menus. This is especially powerful for younger children who can't type well, and for auditory learners of any age.
How does homework help work โ€” the photo feature? โ–พ
Your child taps "Help me solve this" and snaps a photo of their homework sheet (or uploads a PDF or Word doc). Sage reads it, identifies the questions, and walks through them one by one โ€” teaching the method, not giving answers.
Can Sage help with homework my child already finished? โ–พ
"Did it click?" lets your child snap a photo of completed homework. Sage doesn't grade it โ€” instead, it picks the trickiest problem and makes sure your child actually understood the concept. It's the difference between homework that's done and homework that's understood.
Can Sage help with test prep? โ–พ
Yes. Test Debrief lets your child review what went wrong after a test and build a plan for next time. Study Schedule creates a day-by-day study plan leading up to an upcoming test.
What happens if my child asks Sage something inappropriate or off-topic? โ–พ
Sage is an academic tutor only. If your child asks about something outside the curriculum โ€” whether it's a social issue, something personal, or just random โ€” Sage gently redirects: "That's a great question to talk about with your parents or teacher. Want to get back to what we were working on?"
How is Sage different from just using ChatGPT? โ–พ
ChatGPT is a general AI that doesn't know your child's grade, curriculum, or learning history. Sage is built specifically for K-12 tutoring. It follows your school's curriculum, remembers what your child struggles with, adapts difficulty in real time, and teaches step-by-step instead of giving answers. It also has a parent dashboard, diagnostic assessments, homework photo scanning, voice mode, dyslexia support, and age-appropriate themes. ChatGPT has none of that.
๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘ง For Parents
What does the parent dashboard show me? โ–พ
Everything. Which subjects your child has been working on, how many sessions they've had, their streak, which concepts they've mastered, and where they still need work. You can generate a full PDF report card on demand.
How do I access the parent dashboard? โ–พ
Tap the ๐Ÿ”’ lock icon in the top right of your child's home screen. You'll be asked for your parent PIN (set during account creation). This keeps your child from accessing parent settings.
How do I know if Sage is actually helping my child learn? โ–พ
Run the diagnostic when your child starts, then again after 30 days. The before-and-after comparison shows exactly where they've improved. The parent dashboard also tracks progress over time, and you can see concept mastery building session by session.
Is Sage safe for my child to use unsupervised? โ–พ
Yes. Sage only discusses academic content. It doesn't browse the internet, show ads, link to external sites, or engage in non-educational conversations. The parent dashboard gives you full visibility into every session.
Will Sage teach my child things I don't agree with? โ–พ
Sage teaches curriculum content only โ€” what your child's school is teaching. It doesn't express opinions on political, social, religious, or ideological topics. If your child asks about something outside academics, Sage gently redirects them to talk to you or their teacher.
What if my child has a learning disability? โ–พ
Sage includes dyslexia-friendly mode (OpenDyslexic font), full voice conversations so your child never has to read or type, and karaoke-style word highlighting that lights up each word as Sage speaks. We're building additional accessibility features based on parent feedback.
Does Sage replace a human tutor? โ–พ
For many families, yes. Sage provides the same patient, step-by-step tutoring at a fraction of the cost โ€” available 24/7. For kids with complex learning needs, Sage works great as a supplement alongside human support.
๐ŸŽฎ Streaks, Badges & Motivation
What are streaks? What do streak shields do? โ–พ
Your child earns a streak for every day they use Sage. Streak shields protect the streak if they miss a day โ€” so one missed day doesn't erase a month of progress. It builds the daily habit without the guilt.
What are badges and how does my child earn them? โ–พ
Badges are awards for milestones โ€” completing the diagnostic, hitting a 7-day streak, finishing 10 math sessions, and more. They appear on your child's profile. Locked badges show how to earn them. Kids love filling up their trophy wall.
What are subject levels and XP? โ–พ
Every subject has a level that increases as your child learns. XP (experience points) are earned through sessions, quizzes, and practice. It's gamification that makes learning feel like progress, not a chore.
๐Ÿ’ณ Billing & Account
How much does Sage cost after the trial? โ–พ
$29.99/month or $239.99/year ($19.99/month โ€” saves 33%). One subscription covers every child in your household. Prices are in USD.
Do I get charged per child? โ–พ
No. Whether you have 1 child or 5, the price is the same. One subscription, unlimited children.
Is there a discount for paying annually? โ–พ
Yes. The annual plan is $19.99/month ($239.99/year) โ€” a 33% savings compared to monthly. Your price is locked for the full year.
How do I cancel? Will I be charged automatically? โ–พ
Cancel anytime through the app or your Google Play subscription settings. If you cancel during the free trial, you won't be charged. If you cancel after, your subscription runs until the end of the billing period. No contracts, no cancellation fees.
How do I reset my password? โ–พ
Tap "Forgot password" on the login screen. We'll send a reset link to your email. You can also visit sagetutor.app/reset-password.

๐Ÿ“ฑ Technical
What devices does Sage work on? โ–พ
Android phones and tablets running Android 8.0 or later. iOS (iPhone and iPad) is coming soon โ€” join the waitlist and we'll email you the moment it's ready.
Does Sage work offline? โ–พ
Practice Packs work offline once downloaded. Tutoring sessions, voice mode, and homework scanning require an internet connection. WiFi is recommended for the best experience.
Is my child's data private and secure? โ–พ
Yes. Your child's conversations and progress data are private to your family. We don't sell data, share it with third parties, or use it for advertising. Read our full Privacy Policy.
Why does Sage need microphone access? โ–พ
Only for Talk to Sage (voice mode). Your child speaks to Sage through the microphone โ€” Sage listens and responds out loud. If you don't enable the microphone, everything else still works normally through text.
How much data and storage does Sage use? โ–พ
Sage uses about 100MB of storage. Voice mode and homework scanning use internet data similar to a video call. WiFi is recommended.
What if the app is slow or freezes? โ–พ
Try closing and reopening the app. Make sure you're on a stable internet connection. If the problem persists, visit our Troubleshooting page or send feedback through the app.
